Hot Water Heater Dangers

On today's inspection I found a water heater that needed immediate service. The photo below tells it all. This is not the pilot flame, it is the actual flame after I turned up the thermostat knob. There was a delay then large flame that settled out to this this. The burner is so covered with soot that the burner openings were plugged preventing proper distribution of the gas. Note the orange flame, this is an indication of incomplete combustion that produces deadly carbon monoxide.  It is recommended checking the water heater burner at least annually and if you see soot build up or orange flames its time for service. Don't delay maintenance it can be deadly. Luckily for these home owner this condition was caught before a potentially serious accident.
